rspractically constitutes the rigid wheel base of the loco-motive. The rear ends of both the upper and lowerbars of the forward frames are joined by pieces whichform a swivel joint about pins carried by two castings motion work operating both the high and low pressurecylinders are controlled by the same reverse lever so thatwhile both valve motions are independent of each other;they operate in concert. Steam is delivered to the high pressure cylinders froma steam dome located immediately above them by care-fully lagged pipes which pass down on each side of theboiler. Exhaust steam from each high pressure cylinderpasses to a large pipe carried beneath the boiler andlocated a little below the top line of the frames, which actsas a receiver and delivers steam to the low pressure cylin-der. To provide for the lateral motion of the fore partof the locomotive,, this pipe is supplied with flexiblejoints. From the low pressure cylinders exhaust steam is June, 1904. RAILWAY MASTER MECHANIC June, 1904. carried to the smoke arch through a horizontal pipelocated above the top line of frames, made necessary bythe extreme forward position of the low pressure cylin-ders. This pipe is provided with elbows and flexiblejoints. The boiler is of the straight top, radial stay type, 84ins. in diameter at front. There are 436 tubes, 2)/^ ins. indiameter and 21 ft. long, giving a tube heating surface5366.3 sq. ft. The heating surface in the firebox is 219.4sq. ft., making a total heating surface 5585.7 sq. ft. Thegrate surface is 72.2 sq. ft. Coal is fired through twoopenings which are closed by sliding doors operated bylevers. Both check valves are placed on the back head ofthe boiler and feed water is delivered through pipes in-side of the boilers to the forward end. The reverse leveris operated by a steam reversing mechanism. Determining the tractive effort by the usual formulafor tandem compounds, this locomotive is capable of atractive power of 70,000 lbs.
