In recommending designs of cylinder fastenings dis-tinction should be made between passenger and freightlocomotives, even where the cylinder power is thesame. Passenger locomotives exert their full tractivepower only at starting and the cylinder fasteningsare not exposed to as severe continuous strains asthose of freight engines. Passenger locomotives, as arule, also receive better care. Large boiler poweris of such supreme importance in passenger locomo-tives that the weight of all other parts must be re-duced as much as possible.
