Some years ago, when grinding machines were first used, theywere employed on hardened work, such as tools and shafts, thathad to be finished with great accuracy. Since then they havebeen developed so that now the grinding machine is a commontool, even in small shops, where accurate work is done, andespecially where the work must be interchangeable. An emery wheel 12 ins. in diameter and %-in. face will, atthe right speed, present 1,700,000 cutting points a minute; awheel of V/^-m. face will present 2,000,000 cutting points, andwill cut from ll/2 to 4% sq. ft. of surface a minute. For thisreason a grinder will not only do the work faster, but better,than a lathe, and the advantages represent both capacity andaccuracy. Success depends largely upon the grade of wheel selected withregard to the work to be ground. Some try to make a wheeladapted for brass answer for cast iron, and use a wheel for cast
