panying illustration shows a large planer in themachine shop and is noteworthy as showing four largecylinders being machined at once. The planer was manu- A praiseworthy feature of the shop, and one which reflectsgreat credit on the management, is the emergency hospitaladjoining the office of assistant superintendent J. E. Kil-ker. The room, located near the center of the shop, isabout 8xl7-ft., well lighted, provided with glass-topped in-strument tables, a reclining table and everything necessaryfor emergency work, whether it be a filing in the eye, or amangled limb. A young man, who has had a number ofyears experience in this work, is in attendance. He has adesk near the door in the adjoining office and when notin the hospital, he devotes his time to the office. In seriouscases, after the emergency treatment is given, an engineis waiting and the patient can be rushed to the companyshospital in ten or fiften minutes. Large Planer Arranged for Machining Cylinderscases of minor injuries and for these alone has proved abeneficial and profitable investment. Good results have recently been obtained in the boilershop by the oxy-acet.vlene process of welding. Two verysuccessful welds have already been made under the directionof W. M. Wilson, general foreman boilermaker. One ofthese consists of an inserted patch on a side sheet, thetotal length welded being 7 feet, 9 inches. A cut taken acrossthe end of this weld showed the joint to be perfect. Aside sheet, having a crack 30 inches long, was to be weldedin the same manner, the length of the weld in this casebeing 10^ feet. A handy device which has been gotten up in this shopis an adjustable horse, which obviates the use of scaf-folding. The horse is about 7 feet high and sy2 feet wide.The adjustable feature is made up of three pieces of lV2 inchpipe, connected by elbows in such a way that the centralpiece is parallel to the top of the horse, while the oth
