This chamber is 7 feet in length; it istraversed by 314 tubes, 2%. inches in diameter, and is kept filledby two non-lifting injectors located right and left under thecab. The feed discharges through an outlet on the top centerline of the heater, and is then forced into the boiler properthrough two checks, placed right and left a short distance backof the front tube sheet. The combustion chamber is surroundedby a separable joint. This is effected by two rings, which areriveted to the front and back sections, and butted with a V-shaped fit. The rings are united by 36 horizontal bolts, 1% inchesin diameter. Oil fuel is used in these locomotives. The burner is placedin the front end of the firebox and the oil is fed through aheater consisting simply of a long steam jacketed pipe. Santa Fe Articulated Passenger Locomotive is bolted to the upper and lower rails of the front frames, andthus constitutes an exceedingly strong transverse brace. The boiler is equipped with a firebox of the Jacobs-Shuperttype, in addition to which there are a feed-water heater, a super-heater, and also a reheater between the high and low pressurecylinders. The construction of the Jacobs-Shupert firebox haspreviously been described in Railway Master Mechanic. Theinner and outer shells each consist of a series of steel plates, which are flanged to a channel section. Between each pair ofchannels is riveted a stay plate. These stay plates unite theinner and outer shell, and have suitable openings cut in themto permit the steam and water to circulate freely. The flangesof the channels comprising the inner shell, are placed on thewater side; while in the case of the outer shell, the flanges areon the outside. With this arrangement, the operation ot rivetingis facilitated, and no rivet heads
