reservoirsthrough connecting pipes to the cylinders, by plungerswhich receive a gradual but constant downward impulseby a screw motion, which is actuated by a system of lev-ers connected with a return crank on one of the reardriving wheels; in this case two oil pipes are led for-ward from the lubricator to either side of the engine;one of each pair of oil pipes enters the live steam pas-sage through the cylinder saddle, and the other is leddirectly into the cylinder at the middle of the stroke. Casual consideration of this design might lead to theprediction that the upper or 3-in. tubes would be likelyto choke up in service; but it should be remembered thatthe annular space in the lower part of these 3-in. tubesis quite free and unobstructed and can easily be reachedand scoured by a steam jet from the fire box end. Itshould also be borne in mind that the upper flues in anylocomotive are not nearly as likely to choke up as arethe lower flues. 400 RAILWAY MASTER MECHANIC October, 1904.
