Description
English: Railway line at Dawlish Warren. This photograph was taken from on top of Langstone Rocks and looks north over the mainline railway line between Plymouth and Exeter. The landward end of the sandspit and dunes of Dawlish Warren can be seen in the top right quarter of the picture. Also on the right side of the picture can be seen the huge piles of boulders which form the extensive sea defences for the railway line. It is not just the line at this point which is being protected but the Warren itself. Beyond the Warren to the north the railway line runs along the edge of the Exe estuary with almost no protection from any waves to which it would be subject if Dawlish Warren were to break up or to detach itself from the mainland.
