tions of the trolley circuit, tor run-ning the compressor and for control and lights. The control is the Westinghouse type HBFR electro-pneumatic type. Acceleration is entirely by field controlof the main generator and traction motors. Thirty posi-tions of the controllers for both the main generator andthe traction motor fields are provided. The transitionfrom series to separate excitation of the traction motorsiir vice versa can be made at will without any change intractive effort. These locomotives are capable of hauling a 1000-tontrailing load between Skykomish and Tye at a speed of19.8 m.p.h. and using a second locomotive as a pusherthey can haul a 2800-ton trailing load at 15.4 m.p.h. overthis same section. In case of a change in trolley voltage or grade whichwould overload the locomotive, the load is automaticallyreduced and an indication given to the engineman. Sta-bility of the synchronous motor is insured by automati-cally increasing the excitation when there is a possibility
Text Appearing After Image:
Two Unit Motor Generator Locomotive of the Great Northern Railway machine overhung on the synchronous motor bracket isused to furnish excitation for the various machines andpower for some of the auxiliaries. The generator bracketcarries another direct-current generator used for excitingthe fields of the traction motors when regenerating andwhen high speed is desired with heavy loads. Each main axle is driven by a single axle-hung directcurrent series type traction motor through a solid pinionon each end of the armature shaft meshing with a flexiblegear mounted on the hub of each driving wheel. Thefour traction motors of each unit are connected in paral-lel, but any one or all can be entirely isolated when neces-sary. Two blowers used for ventilating the traction motorsand one for ventilating the transformer are driven by sin-gle phase induction motors. To start these motors, themain synchronous motor is equipped with a secondarywinding which is connected with the main transformertn gi
