the one there described had plainbearings. However, in the light of the present, and the increasinginterest of railway men in the possibilities of anti-frictionbearings, the application of roller bearngs on these engines stock showed clearly the limitations of the existing typesof anti-friction bearings, and the experience thus gainedserved as a basis for the development of this design ofbearing. The requirements of first importance in its de-sign were: (1) maximum load carrying capacity withinminimum external dimensions; (2) ruggedness and theability to withstand heavy shock loads; (3) self-alignment.The bearing itself is a self-contained, non-adjustable unit. When mounted on the axle, the single bearing carried thecombined load on the journal, the lateral thrust, the trac-tion and braking reactions and uniformly distributes theseforces over the two rows of rolling elements. A cross-sectional view is shown. The inner race (A)is rigidly secured to the axle either by means of a tapered

Locomotive Tender Equipped with Auxiliary Locomotive or Booster That Is Fitted with S K F Roller Gearings and Manufactured by the Bethlehem Steel Company that were built subsequently is worthy of more than pass-ing notice. Serving both the functions of dead loadcarrier and driving medium, it possesses, from the stand-point of load-carrying capacity and severity of service, themost exacting requirements which the anti-friction bearinghas yet attempted to meet in railway service. More thanthree years ago twenty-nine auxiliaries so equipped wereput in service on two railroads. The service record of thebearings has been characterized by freedom from mechani-cal difficulties, and it has clearly demonstrated their abilityto function satisfactorily under heavy duty railway service.Viewed from the operating standpoint, there appear to besome attractive possibilities for this design of bearing toother types of equipment. The following describes in detail the construction of thebearing and jour
