It is advisable to use a pump in con-nection with exhaust steam water heatersfor the following reasons. The amountof waste heat that can be abstracted fromthe exhaust is dependent upon the rangeover which the water can be heated. Theupper point of this range is fixed by thetemperature of the exhaust steam, there-fore the inlet temperature should be aslow^ as possible in order to reclaim thelargest amount of waste heat. The inlettemperature cannot be below the tempera-ture of the water in the tank, but it shouldnot be above it. It is undesirable to raisethe temperature by live steam. In thecase mentioned above, where the rise of100 deg. by means of live steam wouldmean the impossibility of abstracting over100 B.T.L. from the exhaust steam foreach pound of feed water which couldbe reclaimed.

The effect of preheating is tolessen the difference between the tempera-tur of feed water injected and the tem-perature of the steam evaporated. Amore uniform temperature will effect areduction in the strains upon the variousparts. Consider wliat happens when heatis applied to water. For instance, take aboiler at a pressure of 200 lbs. and feedwater at 60 deg. Fahr. The first effect isto raise the temperature of the waterfrom CO deg. to 3W dcgs., which is theboiling point of water under 200 lbs. Apound of this water will require, roughly,333.4 B.T.L. It is now at the boilingpoint, but none of it has actually beetiturned to -team. Continue the additionof heat, and it will, evaporate into steam, and uh.i. X.^:/ I.T.C. have been :i<U\c<\.
