en, published elsewhere in thispaper, some particulars are given of theimproved valve gear under trial on theGreat Northern Railway of England,which raised quite a furor on the other tried without number on our railroads.Great promises of their efficiency havebeen made concerning many of these in-ventions and in many cases they havebeen promoted and advocated by highlyinfluential railroad men. Yet the best ofthem webt to the scrap heap after theirnovelty had worn ofif, and their sustain-ers became weary of carrying the burden.There has been no decade in railroad his-tory in the United States that failed toI)roducc novelties of valve gear, whosejturpose was to dispense with the D slidevalve and the mechanism used for actuat-ing it. The first line of reputed im-provements were in the form of extracut-off valves, and some of them wereheld in high favor for many years, andthe only reason why they fell into de-suetude was, that a plain single slidevalve distributed the stream just as well,
