1.500 \OLT DIRECT CURRENT LOCOMOTRE. be used in two railway systems in Northand South Carolina. These systems,when completed, will comprise a totalof 280 miles of track. The service willconsist of limited and local passenger,e.xpress and freight. At first 35 mileswill be built and electrified, using 1,500volts direct current on the trolley, fromCharlotte, N. C, to Kings Mountainand will be operated by the PiedmontTraction Company; and 95 miles will bebuilt and operated from Greenwood toSpartanburg, S. C, by the Greenville,Spartanburg & Anderson Railway, us-ing the same voltage on the trolley. The passenger and express servicewill be handled by multiple unit trainswhile the heavy freight will be handledby the locomotives. Each locomotiveis capable of hauling 40 freight carsweighing 45 tons each at 20.5 milesper hour, requiring a tractive effort ofapproximately 13,700 lbs.
