Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The second oldest surviving railway locomotive in the world, built about 1815.

It's called the Wylam Dilly, named after the colliery village of Wylam-on-Tyne, near Newcastle. A dilly was a coal carrying wagon, originally drawn by horses along an iron-railed Waggonway.
Wylam was the birthplace of the railway pioneer George Stephenson, but this locomotive was built by two other local men, the engineer William Hedley and the blacksmith Timothy Hackworth.

These men also built the oldest surviving railway locomotive, "Puffing Billy", displayed at the Science Museum in London, which also ran on the Wylam Waggonway.
