Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Railway Crossing near Kirkby Green The road is the B1191. The railway is the former GNR Lincoln to Grantham line. The signal is a mechanical semaphore signal, which is operated by the signalman in the signal box. It is set to 'protect' the road, as are the gates, which are also operated by the signalman. The semaphore signal was invented during the early 1800s. The railway was built in 1882, though not on its intended route. The Scopwick and Timberland GN/GE Joint Station, which was to the right of this shot, closed as long ago as 1955. The road carries on from here to Scopwick and meets up with the B1188 to Lincoln/Sleaford road.
