They are intended to haulpassenger trains weighing 800,000 lbs., exclusive of engine andtender, between Easton and Wilkesbarre without a helper. Aprofile of the road between Mauch Chunk is given on the inset,and shows how very heavy are the grades and how frequentthe curves of that part of the line upon which these engineswill run. The engine is a Vauclain compound with wide fire-box and72 in. in diameter. The cylinders are 17 and 28 in. in diam-eter, respectively, with 26-in. stroke. The weight of enginein working order is 182,000 lbs., the truck carrying 47,000 lbs.and the remainder, 135,000 lbs., is on the drivers. The fuelis hard coal, and the pressure carried is 200 lbs. Sling staysare only used under the dome and to support the area of crownsheet immediately under the dry pipe. The fire-box is 90 x 114ins., and the crown sheet is longitudinally straight. The crownand side sheets are made from one plate, and are thereforewithout seams. The total heating surface is 2,708.3 sq. ft.
