The tendency in both European and American design of ex-press locomotives is towards an increase in weight and size,au increase in heating surface and of steam pressure, the useof compound instead of single expansion and of coupled wheelsin place of single drivers. In the latest American practice verywide fire-boxes are being rapidly introduced, this being themost marked change in recent construction. It may be of interest to note one or two designs of expresslocomotives now in use on French, English and German rail-ways. The illustration.
