r. It is free to say that the adoption of such a standardhas met with little favor and is considered rather impracticaleven by members of the committee. W^hile there are two ways of receiving the pulling forces onthe car, through attachments at the front end or at the rear,the principle of all draft gear as regards bufiing forces is alike,i. e., the buffing strains are taken by the draft gear proper untilthe spring or other resistance is exhausted, when the remainderof the shock is transmitted direct to the car framing throughthe coupler horn or buffer blocks, if present. In the latestform of draft rigging, the friction gears, the capacity of thegears to absorb shocks has been increased to between 100,000and 100,000 pounds, leaving a smaller propotion of shock to betransmitted by the coupler horn, this increased capacity beingobtained with practically no recoil. It is readily conceded thatthe theory of the friction draft gear is correct, but few have had 2/0 RAn^ROAD DIGEST July, 1901
