Text Appearing Before Image:
s, buildings, structures, and facilities which are necessaryfor the maintenance, care, and storage of locomotives and for pro-viding them with all needed supplies. The supplies are fuel, water, sand, oil, waste, tallow, etc. Ash-pits are generally neces-sary for the prompt and economical disposition of ashes; engine-houses are necessary for the storage of engines and as a placewhere minor repairs can be quickly made. A turn-table is an-other all but essential requirement. The arrangement of allthese facilities in an engine yard should properly depend on theform of the yard. In general they should be grouped togetherand should be as near as possible to the place where through en-gines drop the trains just brought in and where they couple onto assembled outgoing trains, so that all unnecessary running lightmay be avoided. In Figs. 164 and 167 are show^n two designsw^hich should be studied with reference to the relative arrange-ment of the yard facilities. § 300. YARDS AND TERMINALS. 349
Text Appearing After Image:
Pio. 167.—Engine Yabd and Shops, TIrbana. Ili, 350 RAILROAD CONSTRUCTION. § 300. PASSENGER TER:\riNALS. (Passenger terminals are one of the logical subdivisions ofthis chapter, but their construction does not concern one engineerin a thousand. The local conditions attending their constructionare so varied that each case is a special problem in itself—a prob-lem which demands in many respects the services of the archi-tect rather than the engineer. The student who wishes to pursuethis subject is referred to an admirable chapter iir ^ Buildings andStructures of American Railroads/ by Walter G. Berg, ChiefEngineer of the Lehigh Valley Railroad.)
