Description |
English: As early as 1872, Seattle had regular horse racing. Starting in 1902, racing fans flocked to The Meadows, south of downtown Seattle on the current site of Boeing Field. On at least one occasion, the railroad used cattle cars to carry the crowds. The Meadows closed in 1909, when Washington state made racetrack betting illegal. This photo shows the railroad tracks leading south to the racetrack from Seattle. Handwritten on mount: Tracks running to Meadows Racetrack. Caption by MOHAI staff.
