In actual fact, the connection north of Primorsk to Svetlogorsk had been abandoned years ago. Some maps also showed a link between the two lines south of Kaliningrad. In German times, there were also several narrow gauge railways"Schmalspurbahnen" Including one which veered west towards Yantarni from half-way along the main coastal route to Svetlogorsk from Kaliningrad. - the Fischhausen Kleinbahn.The line to Sovyetsk to Kaliningrad looks quite important here, but the actualite was that there were about 2 trains a day , early morning and very late evening from memory.Several bus services travelled from Sovyetsk to Kaliningrad. The northern route via Labiau is highly recommended. Bus services also run to Klaipeda ferry opposite Memel (Sandkrug ) in Lithuania, via the Kuronian Spit (Kurische Nehrung). .At this time, 2003, Baltiysk (Pillau) was still a closed town, but a ferry between Mukran (Ruegen) and Baltiysk has been opened recently, using the same german port as used by the railway ships to Klaipeda in the then USSR, now Lithuania from the late 1980s onwards. |
