region the medullary zone; the blackportions represent the Hassalls corpuscles. Archives dElec. Medicale. igij. Following upon these destructive changes, certain reparativeprocesses may occur. In cases where the degree of irradiationhas not been excessive, this takes place by proliferation of suchlymphocytes and reticulum cells as may be left. Where theirradiation has been more severe in character, the more resistantcentral cells of the medulla undergo proliferation, and so regeneratethe cells both of the medulla and of the less resistant cortex.Lymphocyte regeneration in these cases seems to occur by theproliferation of cells which come by the lymph channels, and THYMUS AND THYROID 209 passing along the perivascular connective tissue, penetrate tothe centre of the lobules, whence they spread peripherally. Pigache and Beclere studied the effects of irradiation, especiallyupon the Hassalls corpuscles, and came to the conclusion thatthese bodies were in reality degenerated lymphocytes.
