The apjiearances of theepiphyses at both ends of thejbones indicate the age of thepatient to be about 3 years. The fibula has a convexity to-Vvards the tibia. Cfest of He horizontal. The epiphysis of the upper end of the tibia is seen to have atongue - like projec-tion extending downthe front of the boneto the tubercle ofthe tibia. In someinstances this projec-tion does not reachso far as the tubercle, and the latter isseen arising from aseparate centre ofossification. In an X-ray picture itresembles somewhat the appearance of the epijjhysis of the upper end ofthe humerus. The greater and lesser trochanters arise from separate centresof ossification, but these are less frequently seen in radiographs than is thelarger epiphysis (see Plate IX. a).
