Abscess of bone, more common in adults than in children, may-result. Chronic abscess in the head of the tibia is somewhat frequent. Thecharacteristic symptom of deep aching pain calls attention to the possibilityof bone abscess. The bone around the abscess cavity is frequently verydense, though it varies in this respect in parts of its circumference. Radio-graphically, the condition may be recognised by an increase in shading andloss of detail in the bone structure on the surface. The periosteal outlineis blurred, and may show patches of caries or collections of pus. The softparts are frequently involved in the inflammatory process, and a soft puffyswelling may be seen over the affected portion of bone. When the diseasehas advanced, the original focus of disease shows up as a lighter area, withpatches of rarefaction of bone
