At the top of the motora small fan is arranged to drive a current of air through the primary of the coil for coolingpurposes. A rhythmeur is arranged below the mercury interrupter. the so-called intensive coils ; that is, one giving a high secondary outputwith a moderate primary current. When possible, the coil should be mountedwell away from the control apparatus, and the terminals, high-tension cables,etc., should be separated as widely as possible to prevent a leak to earth orsparking between the terminals. With the larger coil it should be possibleto pass heavy discharges through the hardest X-ray tube. The CooHdgetube requires, when very hard rays are used, a heavy discharge from thesecondary. This may be obtained from the larger coils now in use. Whenthese very hard tubes are used the high tension transformer, such as the 270 RADIATIO
