is undoubtedly the best. For this method, a well-protectedscreening stand, all the parts of which work with ease and smoothness, isnecessary. The particular form of stand varies with the desires of theoperator, but in order that good results may be obtained a good stand isessential. A convenient form is illustrated opposite. A few mmutes con-sideration of the mechanism will familiarise the operator with its move-ments, and it need not therefore be described. A rectangular diaphragm isbetter than one of the iiis shape, as with the rectangular form it is possibleto examine in detail the roots of the lungs in their entirety. The room should be completely darkened, not even a glimmer of lightbeing permissible when the tube is working. An open fireplace for heatingpurposes is not advisable, but if such is used, then efficient steps must betaken to exclude light from it durinsr the examination. These precautions taken, the operator should allow a few minutes toelapse in the darkened room before the current is allowed to pass throughthe tube, in order that the retina may become sensitive to the fluorescentappearance of the screen when the tube is working.
