In an X-ray picture itresembles somewhat the appearance of the epijjhysis of the upper end ofthe humerus. The greater and lesser trochanters arise from separate centresof ossification, but these are less frequently seen in radiographs than is thelarger epiphysis (see Plate IX. a).

Note lower epiphyses of femur present at birth. The Wrist-joint.—The epiphysis of the lower end of the radius isseen in an antero-posterior view of the joint as a wedge-shaped shadow, andis thicker on the outer than on the inner side of the wrist. The epiphysealline, though irregular and wavy, is never rough and jagged as in afracture. This epiphysis has a great share in the increase in length of theshaft. The epiphysis of the lower end of the ulna is seen at a higher level thanthat of the radius and shows the prominence of the styloid process on itsinner side. The centres of ossification for the carpal bones show according to theage at which the joint is examined (see Ossification ).
