milled nuts, and on lifting this topwith the motor, one at the same time lifts outthe rotating jet and the fixed contacts againstwhich the mercury impinges, so making and break-ing contact two or four times per revolution.The required amount of mercury is poured intothe vessel and the top replaced and refixed. Theinterrupter is then connected to the coil and con-denser and the motor to the supply mains. Mostof these interrupters are provided with an arrange-ment of contacts and terminals, so that it is pos-sible to double the number of primary interruptions, and so increase theefiect in the secondary or tube circuit; other types have an adjustablewedge-shaped contact. Great attention should be paid to the cleanlinessnot only of the interrupter but also of the motor, and especially of thecommutator and oil cups.
