English: A memorial to Rachel Sutton in the chancel of St Mary's, Winterborne Stickland, inscription in Latin. The notice beside the monument gives the translation:
A translation is given on a notice beside the memorial: Statue of the tomb of RACHEL beneath this marble rest the bones of the pious and generous lady RACHEL most faithful and loving and beloved wife of WILLIAM SUTTON S.T.P. who of a seven days fever as though by a refining fire that she might be the purer to occupy a place in heaven for her husband willingly at length submitted to the Divine will and straightway hastened from here to Heaven September 12 1653 Aged 35 She sent before her WILLIAM a little 4 year old, her first-born October 30th 1645 and BARBARA last of the family a daughter of 19 days March 17 1652 their mother's ashes enfolding them in the same urn She left behind among the living 2 sons, 5 daughters, sooner or later to follow her (O, that they may be heirs and imitators of the graces of their mother). Their bereaved father lest the memory of this most sweet and meritorious wife might perish, while he himself survived her has sadly erected this column, a slight memorial of his great love December 13th 1653 |
