English: As early as 1872, Seattle had regular horse racing. Starting in 1902, racing fans flocked to The Meadows, south of downtown Seattle on the current site of Boeing Field. On at least one occasion, the railroad used cattle cars to carry the crowds. The Meadows closed in 1909, when Washington State made racetrack betting illegal.
This photo, taken in downtown Seattle sometime between 1902 and 1909, shows a large group of men in cattle cars headed to The Meadows for a day at the horse races. This is at the intersection of 1st Ave South and King Streets. The M. Seller Co. and Schwabacher Hardware buildings are seen in the background.
