Description
  • Scope and content: This file unit consists of correspondence related to Race Point Light in Provincetown, Massachusetts received by Henry A.S. Dearborn in his capacity as Superintendent of Massachusetts Lighthouses. Included are applications and recommendations for the keeper position, responses to an advertisement for construction proposals for the new lighthouse, and letters from the lighthouse keeper relating to his living quarters. Correspondents include contractor and lamp-maker Winslow Lewis, Revenue Commissioner Samuel Smith, and Lighthouse Keeper Joshua Dyer. Of note is a detailed color drawing of “Cape Cod Lighthouse on Race Point,” possibly submitted to Dearborn as part of a construction proposal.
