Italiano: APPOGGIATESTA - Il piano del poggiatesta è sorretto, con le braccia e con il capo, da una figura femminile inginocchiata. L'enfasi cade sul volto assorto (occhi abbassati, bocca chiusa, assenza di contrazioni muscolari) sul ventre (ombelico prominente con sacrificazioni e raggiera) e sui seni conici. L'acconciatura tubolare bilancia la sporgenza del volto contribuendo ad accrescere l'equilibrio della figura.
Base circolare con bordo inciso. Legno tinto in nero. Gli appoggiatesta in Africa sono utilizzati per preservare l'acconciatura durante il sonno, per avere una maggiore aerazione della testa e per favorire sogni propizi. Il sogno è una delle vie attraverso cui le divinità e gli antenati si manifestano agli esseri umani. Presso i Luba gli appoggiatesta venivano talvolta sepolti con il loro proprietario o anche interrati al suo posto quando mancava il corpo del defunto. Un segno del valore conferito agli appoggiatesta ci è dato dal fatto che quando alla fine del XIX secolo i vicini Yeke attaccarono i Luba, lasciarono intatti loro oggetti, ma bruciarono i loro appoggiatesta (M. N. Roberts, A. F. Roberts 1996). La figura femminile è al centro dell'iconografia della società matrilinerare Luba. |
