Italiano: MASCHERA ELMO SOWEI - Maschera antropomorfa femminile con grande acconciatura a cupola, ampia fronte su cui compaiono tre linee sovrapposte in rilievo (scarificazioni); gli occhi semicircolari con palpebre abbassate sono posti immediatamente sotto la linea orizzontale dell'arcata sopraccigliare; il naso è piccolo e sottile, a base triangolare; la bocca è piccola e di forma ellissoidale. Sotto il mento i rotolini di grasso del collo. Alla base della maschera i fori per l'attaccatura del costume.
Solitamente l'uso della maschera in Africa è una prerogativa maschile. Presso diverse popolazioni della Liberia e della Sierra Leone (Vai, Gola e Mende) esistono però maschere legate a società iniziatiche femminili (Bundu o Sande) che preparano le donne alla vita adulta. Le maschere sowei esprimono l'ideale della bellezza femminile: i tratti sottili del viso, la pelle lucida, i rotolini di grasso del collo, l'elaborata acconciatura, sono tutti segni di buona salute e agiata condizione sociale. Le maschere rappresentano anche gli spiriti delle acque attratti dalla forma dell'elmo e in questo caso le pieghe del collo rimandano all'incresparsi delle acque da cui emergono. |
