Summary
[edit]DescriptionRaasay mermaid - geograph.org.uk - 1465390.jpg |
English: Raasay mermaid. The partner of 262238 who sits on the other side of the old battery above Churchton Bay. This one still has both breasts.
The mermaids played a part in the history of the island, by contributing to the bankruptcy of the MacLeods of Raasay. The clan chief had sent an artist to Italy to find two life-sized stone mermaids for the front of Raasay House. The artist spent years touring Europe at the chief's expense before coming back with these two huge statues. The chief refused to pay the bill on the grounds that that he had asked for life-sized mermaids and that these were larger than life. Litigation took place, with strange arguments about what size was life-size for a mermaid (!) until the Macleods ran out of money and had to sell Raasay to George Rainy. He was responsible for the subsequent eviction of hundreds of families from their land to make way for sheep. |
