| Description |
English: RPC detectors consist of two gas enclosing layers of high-ohmic material (resistive plates), which are coated with copper (cathode and anode) on the outside. A voltage difference accelerates electrons, created via primary ionization (blue dots) of the gas by a charged particle (blue arrow) traversing the chamber, to the anode, where a signal is induced. Only electrons, that are created near the cathode (grey area) reach sufficient energy to induce a detectable signal (indicated in red). Thus, primary ionization for detectable signals exclusively occurs within a small area near the cathode (grey area).
Deutsch: Schematischer Aufbau eines RPC-Detektors: Zwei Widerstandsplatten (resistive plates) umschließen ein Gasvolumen. An den Außenseiten befinden sich Elektroden, zwischen denen eine hohe Spannungsdifferenz anliegt. Tritt ein geladenes Teilchen (blauer Pfeil) in die Kammer ein, werden Gasmoleküle ionisiert (Primärionisation, blaue Punkte). Die langsamen Ionen driften zur Kathode, die schnellen Elektronen zur Anode. Lediglich diejenigen Elektronen, die nahe der Kathode erzeugt wurden, erhalten während der Drift ausreichend Energie um ein detektierbares Signal zu erzeugen (in rot dargestellt). Daher findet die Primärionisation für auslesbare Signale ausschließlich in einem kleinen Bereich nahe der Kathode statt (grauer Bereich). |
