Dagger (parang latok) Date: 1800-1899 Object Number: XXVID.121 Provenance: Found on loan L221.8 to the Horniman Museum (no. 1971.36), Dreadnought Building Store, August 1987. Physical Description: The blade emerges from the hilt as a square sectioned bar that angles into the blade proper. This has a single straight cutting edge and widens somewhat towards the point where the back curves to meet it. The grip is of brass with numerous transverse grooves topped by a pommel of staghorn carved with scrolling foliage. Dimensions: Dimensions: overall length: 64.3cm (25.4in), blade length: 51.9cm (20.5in) Weight: The weight of the weapon is 0.75 kg. Inscriptions and Marks: None. Associations: Places Borneo Notes: This is one of the many types of knives called parangs that were probably as much for general use as for weapons. There is a virtually identical one illustrated in De Wapens Van Indie, A.G.van Zonneveld, 1996, Leiden.
