Description

Stamp of Romania; 1970; commemorative stamp of the issue "Frescos from Romanian Monasteries"; stamp is showing a fresco from the "Sucevita Monastery" in northeast Romania at the village Rădăuți (German name: "Radautz") at the banks of the river Sucevița River; The stamp motive shows the fresco painting "Alexander the Good with his family" from the "Church of the Resurrection of Christ" of this monastery.; meant is Alexander I, King of Moldavia (reign 1400-1432), called "The Good". Under his entourage is also Lady Ana (identical with his wife Rymgaila...?).; The town in the background is not assignable (Constantinople at night...?).; stamp postmarked

The monastery was built in 1585 under the rule of the Princes Ieremia Movila, Gheorge Movila, and Simion Movila. Contemporary this monastery belongs to the Eastern Orthodox Church.
