Summary

[edit]
Description Five U.S. Navy Sikorsky RH-53D Sea Stallion helicopters of helicopter mine countermeasures squadron HM-16 Sea Hawks take off from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68) in preparation of "Operation Evening Light" (Eagle Claw), in the Arabian Sea in Apirl 1980. Six helicopters would be lost during the failed attempt to rescue U.S. hostages in Iran on 24 April 1980.
Note: In the original caption it is claimed that the RH-53Ds are just taking off for Iran. However, for this mission the helicopters were repainted in sand camouflage without any markings. Here, the helicopters are still wearing the standard HM-12 markings and blue-grey camouflage.
