A blocky structure developes abiotically due to periodic swelling and shrinking in loamy, silty and clayey soils. It is characterized most evidently by sharp edges

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A polyhedral structure is formed, abiotically (without intervention by living organisms), by the simple dynamics of retraction-swelling of clay-silt surface soils rich in clay. The most remarkable identifying characteristic is the formation of clean, sharp break edges when the material shrinks as it dries.
This type of soil is relatively impermeable and promotes slow horizontal circulation of water, especially if it is rich in clay and so full of water. In the event of desiccation, it then becomes momentarily percolating; plant roots can then infiltrate there, and then sustainably allow vertical circulation of water, to the detriment of the superficial wet zone if it existed on the surface (in function of relief (geomorphologie) and pluviometry
