Summary

[edit]
Description

RAF Bradford Bay was a wartime airfield on the east coast of England. Over the period of the war several squadrons were based there.

I have a particular interest in 488 Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

My uncle (Jim Affleck) was on that squadron, flying as a navigator/radar operator in a de Havilland Mosquito night fighter, which had only just come into use by them. On the night of 15 September 1943 he and his pilot were killed during an interception of a Heinkel 111 bomber as it approached the London area. I understand that the German crew did not survive either. Only Jim's pilot's body was later found but not my uncle or the German crew.

The memorial at Bradford Bay is a striking one and I'm not aware of anything similar elsewhere in the RAF. Poignantly, it depicts a Mosquito crashing.
