Object history

Part of the collection of war artist Melton Prior (1845-1910), donated to Brighton Museum by his widow Georgiana Catherine Spenser (recorded as Mrs H J Spenser) in 1927. The objects that Melton Prior collected were largely weapons and trophies of warfare, a result of his position at the forefront of the colonial military campaigns. Prior was twice stationed in South Africa, from 1879–1881, and from 1896–1902 covering the second Boer War.

The axe is described as 'Bechuana or Basuto' in the accession register.

Collections from the Bechuanaland Protectorate, now the Republic of Botswana, are the focus of the 2019 Making African Connections research project.
