Summary

[edit]
Description
English: R. Ayr valley The surface material along both sides of the R.Ayr valley consists of glacial till which here has a high clay content. The river has cut down through this material to its present level over the course of 10 000 years i.e. since the end of the last Ice Age. The slopes of the resulting river terraces bordering the present floodplain have become destabilised due to erosion by the river at the foot of the undercut slopes and by mass wasting processes such as solifluction, soil creep and landslides on the slopes behind the floodplain. This has created the hummocky character of the landscape seen here.
