Lettuce is easily grown, and is a profitable garden crop. Lettuce is the best known salad plant in this country It makes a very profitable crop for the market gardener to grow in hotbeds, or the greenhouse during the winter and early spring. It commands a good price, and always in demand. It can be sown in open ground as early as the soil can be worked. Sow in rows twelve or more inches apart, and when the plants become well established, thin to an even stand; not too thick. In order to have a good, crisp, and tender let- tuce, it must be grown on the best, and richest soil, as the crispness depends on the rapidity of growth The ground cannot be too rich to bring it to x>erfectioii. In order to have a continuous supply during the whole season, a succession, or new sowing should'be made every two or three weeks. It is so easily grown, and such a healthful salad that every family should have a supplj'. it is seldom troubled with any injurious insect enemies. A rich soil, and plenty of moisture will give it a crispness, and freshness, that cannot be equaled by any other salad. All tiie distinctive qualitieis of each variety can be found in the regular list, where each sort has a full description. Melons can be made to pay; both for shipping, & home market. Musk Melons, like every other vine crop, delights in a warm sandy soil. The location, and soil, has a great influence in producing delicious quclity and flavor. Thoroughly rotted fine manure should be put in each hill to produce a good yield. Plant liberally, in hills four to six feet apart each way, according to the variety. They cannot be jjlanted in open ground until warm weath- er, but the seeds can be started in small pieces of inverted sods, and gain a week or two in crop. Thin out to three or four plants to each hill. Give good culture, and keep thorn free from weeds. A light warm soil is the most congenial for melons. If troubled by insects use the same remedy prescribed for cucumbers. If insects work on tlio roots, turn a small quantity of strong tobacco- water into each hill. The small or basket size melons are very popular for shipping, and the dis tinctive qualities, and usefulness, will be found in the description of each variety in the melon department. Large melons may sometimes sell best in the home, or local market, and it will be to the gardeners' advantage to ascertain what varieties their merchants and customers prefer.
