Description

These images come from the Isachsen mission, which aimed to explore the northwest of Spitsbergen. It is one of the expeditions carried out with the support of Prince Albert I, sovereign of Monaco, on his yacht.

West Spitsbergen, 500 kilometres east of Greenland, is the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. It has a surface area of 37,673 km2 and dimensions of 280 km long and 40 to 225 km wide. Its geological layers and fossils provide insight into continental drift. The original Scandinavian name "Spitsbergen" (with an s) was historically given to the entire archipelago (literally the word means "pointed mountains") and is often still used incorrectly today. The German spelling (with a z) is the most commonly used in French. The entire archipelago depends on Norway. However, the archipelago is governed by a treaty signed in Paris in 1920 by thirty countries which grants certain rights of access to other countries. Coal mines operated by Russian interests in Barentsburg are a consequence of this treaty.
