English: Complaint by the Catalan historian and writer Joan Cortada i Sala in the newspaper "El Guardia Nacional" due to the banning of cemetery epitaphs in Catalan language. Extract from the 26th of October 1838, written before the linguistic regulatory of 1930s:
Translated in English: Mr Taberí, I have read the article on V. 24 November, and to clarify this matter I must say that on the 21st, I received a trade from the cemetery board, in which they said in substance that our language is not in public use, that it is not authorised by law, and that Catalan epitaphs are not easy to understand by outsiders. So I and my fellow Academy members were asked not to allow such inscriptions, unless they were worthy of exception for their novelty and merit. Even so, V. same day as I let him put his wife's epitaph in Catalan, and I also intend to do so with all those who come; because I love very much the language of our grandparents, in which were written our old codes and the first maritime code of the world, in which our troubadours sang and from which the Italian poets learned, and in which I myself worked and was applauded both in my homeland and outside. This means that, for me, you can already put epitaphs in Catalan, because those who come to Catalonia and do not understand it, will have to learn it, which is what we do when we go to foreign lands. Server.= Joan Cortada. |
