Maryborough to Qympie. MARYBOROUGH is a large town on the Mary River, 26 milesfrom the entrance in Sandy Island Straits These straits-are formed by great Sandy Island, usually known as FrazersIsland, after Captain Frazer of the ship Stirling Castle, wreckedoff there in 1838, the captain and crew being killed by the blacksafter landing on the coast. This island is 68 miles long, 14 milesacross at the widest part, and three miles at the narrowest point on thehead of Platypus Bay. At the north end a long sandy spit, knownas Breaksea Spit, runs out for 19 miles from the land. Vesselsfrom Brisbane for Maryborough enter the straits over the Wide Baybar, between Inskip and Hood Points, and from there to the mouthof the Mary, a distance of 28 miles, travel along the narrow straitwhich resembles an ordinary river ; Frazers Island on one side andthe mainland on the other. On the left hand, after entering at thebar, is Tincan Bay, running 13 miles into the mainland, a source ofvast timber suppli
