Settlement increases as you approach theterminus, until the train stops at Beaudesert, a picturesquelysituated progressive little township, on the slopes of flat ridges,timbered by spotted gum, ironbark, and apple tree. Over the tree-tops rise the mountains, the rock crest of Lindesay, and thepyramid peak of Barney, grey and blue and silent above the summitof the McPherson Range. Beaudesert is a French word, meaning, literally, a beautifulwaste, or a lovely desert. The correct sound would be Bo-dezair.It forms at present the sole depot for all the pastoral and agricul-tural and timber country on the head of the Logan. There arethree hotels, several places of business, and a number of privatehouses. It occupies a very healthy position, situated in a highdry eucalyptus country near to the mountains, a cold bracing airin winter and a reasonable heat in summer. Beyond Beaudesert,for twelve miles, there has been a trial survey of a prospectiveextension, following the course of the river.

(Opened to Ravenswood, December 1st, 1884-) A I (HIS railway leaves the Charters Towers line, 53 miles fromTownsville, and runs for 24 miles across poor granite countrytimbered chiefly by blood wood and ironbark. The terminus is thetown of Ravenswood, standing on granite country on the head ofsmall creeks running into the Burdekin. This town stands about athousand feet above sea level, and is famous for the salubrity of theclimate. Ravenswood is one of the healthiest towns in NorthQueensland. It contains a population of about 1500 people, directlyengaged or depending upon mining. Around this town is an ex-tensive field of gold and silver ores. An argentiferous belt extendssix miles north west from the richest centre of the goldfield. Thereis a clear distinction between the grey granite of the gold field andthe red granite of the silver.
