English: Kangaroo Point as rough bush town had colourful history
KANGAROO Point in the 1850's was a rough bush township set among ti-trees and wattle. Main Street then was a rough track cut through the scrub. Along it bullock teams plodded on their way to the south and to the Darling Downs. The loads were ferried across the river from the present Customs House site, to save them having to be taken over the swampy route through South Brisbane. Cobb and Co's coaches were ferried across the river by punt in 1866. Kangaroo Point was so named because kangaroos and wallabies frequented the district in its bushland days. Part of the area was used for growing maize during the convict regime and Kangaroo Point blocks were included in the colony's first land sale.
