Summary

[edit]
Description

On the 21st of August 1958, Auckland became the first city in New Zealand to employ the ‘Barnes Dance’ style of pedestrian crossings. This system, named for American traffic engineer Henry A. Barnes, stops all vehicle traffic so that pedestrians can cross busy intersections in any direction at the same time. (there was then a popular pastime called Barn Dancing)

The Barnes Dance crossing system has become a feature of pedestrian traffic on Queen St in Auckland and Lambton Quay in Wellington, as well as other busy inner city streets throughout the country.

This image shows pedestrians crossing the road in every direction on Queen Street, Auckland.
