Summary
[edit]DescriptionQuay at Lamorna - geograph.org.uk - 915417.jpg |
English: Quay at Lamorna View south-west across the small beach to the harbour wall. Now a place to relax and play in boats, but that was not always the case. A timber jetty was first built here to load the granite from the nearby quarries onto ships. This was replaced in 1854 by the stone pier. Heavy seas often delayed loading the stone and threatened moored vessels, which raised the price of Lamorna granite. As a result, sea transport was abandoned in favour of difficult but regular transport overland to Penzance. The quarries ceased production in 1911. Lamorna granite was of high quality and was used to build many important landmarks. Perhaps most notably it was used to build The Embankment in London, which not only provided a barrier for the Thames and housed new underground lines, but most importantly saved thousands of lives by housing the superb London sewerage system.
