Summary

[edit]
Description

Quartzose sandstone (5.8 cm across at its widest) from the Cretaceous of Montana, USA.

The Eagle Sandstone is a widespread, Late Cretaceous-aged marine unit in Montana. It represents nearshore and shallow marine deposition in the ancient Western Interior Seaway. This sample is an unusual for a quartzose sandstone. The grains are dominated by angular to subangular sand (plus some minor lithic sand). Many quartzose sandstones are dominated by subrounded sand grains.
